Aside from having a strong personal message, this clutch performance is a great display of songwriting ability by a young talented writer. This song was composed in a matter of hours before the show, practiced and performed. Yet somehow, the performance manages to grasp nearly the entire audience, and holds on for a rollercoaster-type ride of memories and humor. The crowd unites in applause at the end. All taking place in front of close friends and peers, this moment is definitely one of the highlights of John's early songwriting career.

Part 1
"Playing American Idiot 1st is insane. We started off a lot of our concerts back then with that song, and its like jumping on a train going 100mph. It takes off.
If you look closely, before the shout section in the middle of the song, the band was off from one another. I have a major hesitation before I go into the shout chorus, and I remember seriously thinking of skipping the whole thing. Looking back, if we would have shyed away from the crowd at that time, I don't think they would have followed us for the rest of the concert the way they did. "
